Chapter 33 Monster subjugation 1
Leaving the shop, we walked along the street.
Opportunities to walk through crowded places are rare for us, so it feels fresh.
Generally, I’m either at home or in Istria, and even when I go to Istria, I often travel by carriage.
The people passing by are either merchants, mercenaries, or residents.
People of all ages and genders. There are various kinds of people.
There are no demi-humans.
I’m not a furry fan, and I don’t mind, but if there were any, it might be a bit exciting.
That’s beside the point.
Marie, Glast, and I walked side by side down the street.
“First, let’s go to the guild. It’s better to take on requests for defeating monsters.”
“The guild?”
“Yeah, there are various guilds, but the one we’re going to now is the Adventurers’ Guild.
It’s a place that mediates requests from individuals, organizations, or countries.
There are a wide range of requests, from monster subjugation and capture to escorting on the road, and even everyday tasks like helping with household chores.
Since they mediate a wide range of requests, it’s essential in any country.”
The Adventurers’ Guild, huh?
It’s a familiar term.
It exists in this world too.
I didn’t know until just now.
Ordinarily, I would have looked it up first, but my interest was only in magic.
Now, I’m a little interested in monsters.
It’s because I know that monsters also carry magical power.
However, I don’t know if it’s only goblins or if it applies to other monsters as well.
“Why go to the guild?”
“There are several benefits. First, there’s a reward. This is significant.
There’s a difference in motivation between unpaid and paid requests.
Also, when you take on a request, you get information about the monster in question.
How many are there, where is the location, what kind of species, and so on.
Next, if you register with the guild, you can almost permanently remain registered, and your evaluation score increases with each completed request, leading to a higher rank.
With a higher rank, you can take on high-difficulty requests, receive direct requests, and gain special privileges.”
I see. In that case, it’s probably better to take on a request first. It doesn’t seem like there are any downsides as far as I’ve heard.
“What kind of special privileges are there?”
“A permit to enter restricted areas is significant.
Because regular people can’t enter, you can obtain special minerals, materials, and the like.
Also, prices at sponsored shops may become cheaper, and you can take on special requests.
It’s not all advantages, as you might be called to respond to emergencies, but overall, it’s quite beneficial.”
Thinking ahead, it seems quite useful.
In particular, the ability to enter restricted areas is substantial.
There’s much I don’t know about magic.
Magic probably isn’t something that can be self-contained with just my existence.
Magical reactions from monsters, thunder stone—these are things I wouldn’t have known while staying inside the house.
There must be other things related to magic in the outside world.
If the places where these exist are restricted to the general public, it’s probably a good idea to raise my rank as an adventurer.
Well, I’m still a child, and it’s not something to rush into immediately.
It’s about looking ahead into the future.
“So, first, let’s register with the guild.
For children, the registration condition is that someone with an adventurer rank of gold or higher must approve.
I’m platinum, so that’s not a problem.
The ranks are bronze, silver, gold, platinum, diamond, and orichalcum from the bottom up.
Orichalcum rank is held by only a few people in the world—legendary individuals.”
Using a rank system makes it very straightforward.
At least, from my perspective.
“I understand. Then, let’s go to the guild. Is that okay with you, sis?”
“Yeah, it’s fine.”
Her demeanor is different from usual.
Sis is clearly nervous.
It’s only natural.
After all, we’re about to face monsters.
It’s natural to be scared, and it would be strange if she were calm.
Watching sis, Glast seems worried.
“Don’t push yourselves too hard. It doesn’t have to be today.
Shion is still eight, and Marie is ten.
There are people at those ages who have already defeated monsters, but that doesn’t mean you have to do the same today.”
Sis vigorously shakes her head.
“No, it’s okay. If I run away here, I’ll probably keep running forever. Then, I won’t become strong. I want to become stronger. Strong enough to protect myself, everyone, and Shion too.”
Sis clenches her fist tightly and looks straight at Glast. There’s a strong determination in her eyes.
Glast, upon seeing sis like that, shows a hearty smile.
“I see. Well, like I said earlier, I’m here, so no problem. I’ll definitely protect both of you. It’s your first battle. Just relax a bit and do your best.”
Marie nods with determination. I realize that a warmth is born in my chest upon understanding sis’s resolve.
I know why sis decided to go monster hunting. It’s to overcome the fear of goblins. If you harbor fear in a battle, it can become a trauma, making it impossible to fight again. Amidst many who choose to escape, sis is aware and intends to confront her own fear.
Knowing all this, I didn’t say anything. When I mentioned that I wanted to go monster hunting and sis said she would accompany me, I, thinking about whether magic is effective against monsters and wanting to gain experience in monster combat, decided to embark on this monster hunting adventure.
It would be too dangerous for me alone, and I knew Dad would oppose it if I told him. So, I thought of asking someone else to accompany me. Learning that Glast had some experience with arms, I seized the opportunity and asked for his help. Glast had apparently gone through a similar experience in the past and didn’t mind accompanying us. As I turn after a light pat on the shoulder, Glast leans in closer.
“You’re really loved, huh? You’re one lucky guy.”
“…I don’t know how to react to that.”
“Hahaha, well, I guess so. Being loved by your big sister, huh? Well, having a close-knit family is important. You’ve got a good sister; treasure her.”
“Yes. I definitely intend to.”
“Heh, that’s a good expression. Even though you’re still a kid, sometimes I think you’re quite mature.”
Well, my essence is that of an adult. Still, there are many times when I rely on my sister, and I have childish aspects too. I have no pride. Both adults and children have a lot to learn from each other. This is my second life—a life with magic and a precious family. I have to cherish it. I’m seriously, earnestly, determined to live each day to the fullest.
“As for today’s prey, I’m planning to target Kobolds. They’re among the weaker monsters, so it’s perfect for a first battle. Among monsters, the three major races with significant influence are Goblins, Kobolds, and Orcs. Kobolds, in particular, have large numbers, and their individual strength is weak due to their high breeding rate. Goblins have fewer numbers, but each one is relatively strong and vicious. Orcs have even fewer numbers, but they’re large, and each individual is quite powerful.”
“Are there other monsters?”
“Yeah, there are. But in terms of territorial distribution, it’s mainly these three races and others. Among the others, there are many species, but their numbers are small. The guilds in various places constantly have requests for subjugating these three races.”
Monsters always pose a potential threat to humans, especially the three major races. They seemed to have settled near our village. It seems like there are no humans who would be troubled even if the monsters were subjugated.
As we walk and talk, we eventually arrive at our destination. It seems quite sizable, with numerous people coming and going, creating a bustling atmosphere. Seeing such a large wooden structure, it puts me in a somewhat idyllic mood. Not a bad feeling at all.
“Alright, let’s go in.”
Glast promptly enters the guild. We follow suit and step inside. Inside, there are people clad in armor or carrying weapons, alongside many ordinary-looking folks. There are various counters for request applications and acceptances. Oh, right. Individuals making personal requests also go to the counter, so there are plenty of non-adventurers around. Perhaps that’s why we didn’t stand out much; there were few children. We head toward the adventurer registration counter. It seems to be vacant now, and we quickly move to the front.
“Registration for two. These kids here.”
Glast takes out a necklace he had hanging around his neck and shows it to the woman at the counter. There’s a faintly gleaming ornament at the tip. Is it made of platinum, or is it an imitation? The woman at the counter looks quite young, probably in her late teens.
“Understood… uh, these children, right?”
“Yeah, I’m Platinum rank, so a recommendation should be no problem, right?”
“Well, yes, if introduced by someone Platinum rank or higher, adventurer registration is possible. However… um, these two seem to be under ten years old.”
“Age doesn’t matter, right? There should be plenty of precedents. Besides, I’ll take care of them during jobs. No problem.”
An irritated Glast and a flustered counter woman create a somewhat tense atmosphere. My sister and I exchange glances, wondering what to do.
“Um, well… so, there are two of you, and if it were just one, it might not be an issue, but…”
“Oh? It’s fine. We’re just taking simple requests. Come on, finish the registration.”
“Why don’t you cut it out? Not very mature.”
A voice from behind interrupts. Glast, still wearing an unpleasant expression, turns around.
“Huh!? Who’s sticking their nose into someone else’s business?”
“It’s me.”
“Dad!?”
We open our mouths in surprise, completely frozen. Faced with an unexpected situation, our thoughts are paralyzed. Why is Dad here? How did he find out? Dad came to stop us. Various thoughts whirl in my head, and I’m in a state of childish anxiety about being scolded.
Leaving us in our stunned state, Dad talks to the woman at the counter.
“I’ll accompany them. I’m Diamond rank. Any problem with that?”
Dad takes a necklace from his pocket. Unlike Glast, it’s a highly radiant ornament.
“Y-yes. As a Diamond-ranked individual, that’s fine! Um, then, could you please sign here?”
Prompted by Dad, we signed at the counter. With just that, the registration seemed to be complete, and we were handed small necklaces. Hanging from the tip was a bronze ornament. My sister and I took the necklaces and put them around our necks.
“This serves as proof of being an adventurer, so please don’t lose it. Reissuing it will incur a fee. Well then… ahem, congratulations. From now on, please take care of things. As adventurers, please act with decorum and fulfill your requests. Well then, have a great journey!”
The woman, with a voice and smile that seemed straight out of a manual, waved her hand. We bowed and moved away from the counter. The atmosphere felt somewhat heavy, and, except for Dad, the other three seemed uncomfortable.
“You should accept a request first. We can talk later.”
“Ah, yeah, let’s do that…”
Glast, after glancing at us, picked up a piece of paper from the request board, then headed toward the request acceptance counter, looking a bit perplexed. We followed behind him.
Accepting a request was straightforward. You just needed to bring the request form. Afterwards, to confirm the completion of the request, it was necessary to bring back a part of the monster, like an ear in the case of Kobolds. This was probably to ensure that they hunted the specified number and not just any part, as things like teeth were abundant. Once we accepted a request, we stepped outside. The air remained indescribably tense. The three of us lined up, facing Dad.
“And so, what do you want to say?”
“Sorry!”
“We apologize!”
“I’m sorry!”
We all apologized simultaneously, bowing our heads. That was the only thing we could do. Dad had seen through our intentions. I didn’t know when or why he figured it out, but the situation was what it was. No matter how we tried to explain, it wouldn’t change anything.
I glanced at Dad’s expression. He didn’t seem angry.
“Well, it went just as expected.”
“As expected…? Dad, did you know that we were going to hunt monsters?”
“I didn’t know if it was for hunting or not, but I knew you were up to something. Especially when Marie talked to me or Emma, her eyes were wandering. It was clear she was hiding something.”
“Ugh, s-sorry, both of you.”
Typical of my straightforward sister. I thought I was acting normal, but it seemed my focus had narrowed. I hadn’t paid attention to my sister’s behavior.
“Seriously, attempting monster hunting without informing me. Monsters are dangerous. Going to places with monsters is out of the question. We talked about this, didn’t we? Is that not true?”
“Y-yes, that’s correct.”
“We’re sorry, Father…”
My sister and I felt dejected. We were aware that we were breaking the rules. But we thought it was necessary, even if it didn’t align with Dad’s intentions.
“Heh, they both had their reasons, so don’t scold them too much.”
“Coming from you, seriously.”
Given a stern look by Dad, Glast sighed awkwardly, avoiding eye contact and starting to poorly whistle. He wasn’t fooling anyone. Dad let out a heavy sigh.
“…Explain the reasons.”
Prompted by Dad, we explained ourselves. My sister wanted to become stronger and overcome the fear from that day. I wanted to test the effects of magic and confirm its effectiveness against monsters. When we finished explaining, Dad sighed again.
“I see, I knew it wasn’t just a half-hearted play. Well, I knew that from the beginning. I didn’t think Shion and Marie would engage in such dangerous antics just for fun. However, I needed to be aware. Both of you, lift your heads. Your actions had meaning, right? If so, stand tall. Even if you get scolded, hold your heads high.”
We looked up at Dad. He was smiling a little. He seemed a bit pleased.
“It’s commendable that you haven’t acted alone and have a trustworthy person as an escort. Looking ahead and preparing properly is crucial. Even though Glast is with you, there are no absolutes in this world. The lower the risk, the better. From now on, tell me about it too. With two high-ranking individuals, you can undertake the mission with peace of mind.”
“Huh? Th-that means…”
“Yes, indeed. I’ll accompany you.”
I was taken aback by this unexpected statement. Dad had often been on our side, but he also frequently opposed and imposed restrictions on dangerous activities. Recently, he had allowed my sister to participate in experiments, relaxing the restrictions a bit. But was this really okay?
“I thought that by observing your magical experiments and sword training, both of you could try new things. It’s better to accompany you in places beyond my reach where there might be danger. Of course, you’re still children, and as adults, we need to keep an eye on you. But thinking that just because you’re children means you can’t do anything is a mistake as a parent. Shion and Marie have learned a lot and achieved much in a short period. There are many things I can’t do. So, I’ve reconsidered my stance a bit. That’s all.”
Maybe my confusion was evident on my face. Dad explained the reason for his decision. It was surprisingly sudden and matter-of-fact. I was grateful for his support and relief that having Dad around would make things safer.
“Thank you, Dad.”
“Father… thank you! I’ll do my best!”
“Hehe, don’t worry about it. But when it comes to battle, take it seriously. Don’t let your guard down, okay?”
“Yes!”
Beside us, energetically responding, Glast nodded approvingly.
“Glast, you’ll be doing a hundred rounds next time.”
“Are you trying to kill me!? Alright, alright! My bad! I’ll show you! I’ve become quite strong, you know!”
“Hmph, I look forward to it!”
For some reason, Glast seemed to be the only one singled out. I’ll apologize to him later…
“Well then, let’s go. We need to move quickly, or we won’t make it home on time.”
Dad took the lead, and we left the guild. Despite unexpected twists and turns, everything turned out as we hoped in the end. No issues, I suppose. And so, we headed towards the quest to defeat monsters.
