ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
After the two of them left the café, I let out a relieved sigh. I was glad the discussion went on smoothly.
“…I guess she managed to break up with him in the end.”
I was feeling really nervous when Yamachi argued back, but somehow, the conversation ended without any major problems.
I’m really glad everything worked out for the best.
I shouldn’t be happy knowing someone broke up with their boyfriend, but still. I was relieved to know that things went according to our plan.
Anyway, my job here is done. I don’t need to stay close or intervene anymore. But… What’s this… Why do I have this bad feeling…? It’s good if I’m just overthinking things, but… If it’s not…
I didn’t have any real reason for this bad feeling. None at all. I just felt strangely uneasy. Maybe it was because they didn’t break up straight away? Because they still went somewhere together?
…No. Something feels off.
I had already anticipated the possibility of them going somewhere after the talk. Things were still going according to my expectation, but… This feeling of anxiety wouldn’t leave my body. It was like my instincts were yelling at me that my role wasn’t done yet.
Sure, it’d be great if I was just worrying over nothing, but…
Just to be sure. Just to be sure… I should follow them before I head home.
I told myself that before I quickly left the café.

“Hey, where are we going?”
“Hmm… You will know soon enough.”
Yamachi only gave Shizuku a vague reply. This back-and-forth had been repeated a few times already. Yamachi refused to give a clear answer. Although she was feeling suspicious of Yamachi, Shizuku still followed Yamachi, thinking that this was the last time before their break up. Before long, they had arrived at the entertainment district on the opposite side of the station.
Just until a moment ago, Shizuku had been on the east side of the station, where there were several large commercial facilities catered for students and young people. The entertainment district on the west side was filled with restaurants and catered for a more mature crowd. The train tracks separated the station from the entertainment area. Shizuku rarely ventured to the west side of the entertainment district.
At least, until last week. She had witnessed her boyfriend’s affair. Without even realizing the sudden downpour had drenched her, she wandered around in a daze and somehow, she ended up on the west side. Her mind was a jumbled mess, but still, the hunger was palpable. She was then drawn to the ramen shop where a certain guy worked part-time.
Right. I need to thank Suou-kun later. I will thank him for looking out after me and remind him not to forget about the lunch box.
Shizuku was lost in her thoughts as she walked when she suddenly realized something. Yamachi was walking away from the entertainment district. He was heading toward an area she didn’t recognize. She vaguely remembered there were no shops further in this direction and not to mention, they had never been to this area together before. So why did Yamachi look so confident? He was walking without any hint of hesitation, which made Shizuku even more suspicious.
“Hey… Where are we going?”
“You’ll know in just a little while.”
In the end, Shizuku was led to a quiet alley narrow enough for just one car to pass through, still without any clear answers. The moment Shizuku saw the love hotels lining up the street, a chill ran through her body, freezing her to the core. It felt like all the air was sucked out of her, making it hard to breathe. Without any hesitation in his stride, Yamachi kept walking until he eventually stopped in front of the third hotel in the row. Then, Shizuku asked him again.
“This place is—”
“You get it now, don’t you?’
Yamachi said while draping his arm over Shizuku’s shoulder and pulled her closer to him. Shizuku gasped. Her eyes wide and she instinctively shook his arm off.
“No!”
However, right after she did so, Yamachi gripped her wrist tightly.
“It hurts…!”
The grip was so strong that Shizuku’s face twisted in pain. Fear surged through her, causing her entire body to tense. Her thoughts were locked in place. However, strangely enough, not a single tear fell from her eyes.
Ah… Turns out, humans can’t even cry when they’re truly terrified.
Shizuku thought calmly. Her mind was slowly detaching from reality. Yamachi’s gaze was as cold as ice as he looked at her.
“We’re breaking up because of your selfishness. You need to put up with this much at least.”
Yamachi said as he let out a long, exasperated sigh. He didn’t even bother to hide his frustration.
“Shizuku, you never once let me do it, did you? You kept refusing over and over. Did it never cross your mind how unfair you’re being to me? Who saved you from being an outcast back in middle school? It was me, wasn’t it? If you’re really grateful to me, then you better repay me with this.”
His voice was calm, but carried a dark undertone. The weight of his voice made Shizuku shrink even further. A heavy drop of water suddenly fell from the sky and landed on her cheek. The droplet slid down her cheeks, down to the ground, followed by a torrent of fresh raindrops. The sudden downpour quickly turned their surroundings into a white haze, soaking Shizuku down to her hair and clothes.
“Tch, how annoying. Why’s it gotta rain now?”
Yamachi muttered, looking clearly irritated as he yanked Shizuku’s arm with more force than needed.
“Come on. Let’s get inside already.”
If she were to reveal the truth, that he had been cheating with katagiri, maybe she could escape from this situation. However, Shizuku didn’t have any strength left in her to do so.
…It’s fine. At least, I won’t be returning his kindness with evil in this way.
She had wanted to save her first time for something more precious, something more meaningful, but… It couldn’t be helped. Just as she resigned herself to her fate and began moving toward the entrance of the hotel…
“Let her go.”
A low voice seemed to cut through the roar of the downpour. In the next instant, Yamachi’s grip on her was forcibly pried away. Shizuku was pulled toward the direction of the voice. She turned her head to see a boy wearing a black cap holding her protectively. His body was a bit bigger than hers and beneath the wide brim of his cap, his sharp, raptor-like eyes glared at Yamachi intensely.
“Suou-kun…?”
The one who had come to her rescue was the boy who had been quietly watching over Shizuku as she was driven to the edge of despair.
